Ditching the Laptop Lifestyle; The Key to Success and Well-being
Jul 18, 2023You can work from anywhere.
But should you?
The laptop lifestyle… you can travel anywhere and take your business with you. That’s the entrepreneurial dream isn’t it?
Imagine, working from the beach in Tahiti… the warm sandy beneath you, the sparkly blue water, and your laptop.
Is this really the dream or a lie we’ve all been sold too many times?
First of all… working from the beach isn’t practical at all. Sand gets everywhere; including inside your keyboard. And have you ever tried to read your screen while the sun beats down on you? Not to mention how quickly that sun will overheat your laptop.
So then what is the answer? To work from your hotel room? Well that doesn’t seem as glamorous does it?

In our modern society, it's easy to fall into the trap of constant busyness, always plugged in and constantly chasing success. But here's the thing – true success is not defined solely by productivity and endless work. It's about finding balance and taking care of ourselves, both physically and mentally. And that's where the magic of rest comes in.
We often hear about the importance of work-life balance, and it's no surprise that forward-thinking organizations now encourage their employees to take vacations for increased productivity. Some companies have even eliminated rollovers, insisting on employees using their vacation days within the year. This practice acknowledges the need for rest and rejuvenation. But what about entrepreneurs, the go-getters who build their businesses from the ground up? Well, they need to prioritize time off too. Taking a step back to reevaluate their strategies, recharge their energy, and reconnect with what truly matters can be a game-changer for their businesses and personal lives.
Now, I know what you might be thinking - "How can I possibly generate income while not working?" Well, fear not! Success can be found in unconventional methods. Think about creating online courses or exploring affiliate opportunities. You can leverage time differently and uncover new income streams that don't require your constant presence. One fantastic example of this is a group of trusted friends and colleagues who support each other by collaboratively helping with each other's businesses. They earn commissions from closed deals and share the workload.
I understand that many entrepreneurs struggle to take breaks because they worry about what will happen to their business or income in their absence. If this resonates with you, it might be time to reflect on your business's foundation. Do you have the systems and structures in place to enable your business to run without you?
Ditch the laptop lifestyle to prioritize rest, relaxation, and let’s reevaluate our business strategies.
The Power of Taking Vacations.
We often associate success with constantly being busy and glued to our laptops, but in reality, embracing time off is crucial for increased productivity. Forward-thinking corporations understand this and encourage employees to take their designated vacation days. Some companies have gone a step further, implementing policies that prevent vacation days from rolling over into the next year. Entrepreneurs, too, need to prioritize breaks and reassess their business strategies if they find themselves unable to take time off.
Generating Income While Taking Time Off.
Believe it or not, it is possible to generate income even when you're not actively working. One way is to explore opportunities like creating courses or participating in affiliate programs. By leveraging time differently, you can ensure a stream of income while enjoying some well-deserved rest. Additionally, consider offering coaching services or partnering with friends and colleagues to support each other's businesses and earn commissions from closed deals. With creativity and collaboration, a four-day weekend every week or a three-week work, one-week off arrangement becomes a viable option.
The Pitfalls of the Laptop Lifestyle.
Personal experience is often the greatest teacher. In my earlier years as a personal trainer, I fell into the trap of trading time for money. Burnout became a constant companion, and it was clear that I needed to find a better way to structure my business. The laptop lifestyle may seem appealing, but it can quickly drain our energy and detract from the passion we have for our work. Connecting with our clients on a deeper level and having dedicated time for rest and rejuvenation is essential.
Adopting a CEO Mindset.
To truly embrace a laptop-free lifestyle, we must shift our mindset and adopt a CEO mentality. This means having systems and strategies in place that allow our business to thrive even when we're not physically present. Whether it's scheduling content in advance or setting up sales systems for courses and programs, investing in these foundational elements allows us to step away without compromising our income or the quality of our services.
The Importance of Rest and Recovery.
Ignoring the need for rest and recovery can have catastrophic consequences. Taking proper breaks and fully recharging our minds and bodies decreases the likelihood of illness. By setting clear expectations with clients about response times and planning for downtime, we reduce the pressure to work while sick. Building self-care routines and understanding the importance of rest are critical for long-term success and well-being.
Generating Income Beyond the Laptop.
Imagining a life without constant laptop dependency might seem daunting, especially if you genuinely love what you do. However, it's important to consider alternative income streams that allow for time away while generating revenue. Whether it's creating digital products, writing books, or engaging in affiliate partnerships, diversifying income sources frees us from being tied to our laptops and opens up new opportunities for growth and impact.
Take a moment to think about the role rest and vacation play in your own life. Are you prioritizing time off, or are you caught in the cycle of the laptop lifestyle? Remember, success isn't just about being constantly busy and occupied; it's about achieving a state of fulfillment in all areas of our lives. I invite you to join us on this journey of embracing a laptop-free lifestyle, where we recharge, strategize, and thrive, both personally and professionally.
The truth is, self-care is not just a buzzword; it's an essential element of long-term success. As I mentioned earlier, I had to learn this the hard way. But once I started implementing these strategies and embracing rest as a vital part of my journey, everything changed. I became better at what I do, my creativity blossomed, and my clients benefited too.
Make sure to schedule time off this summer and block it off on your calendar. Even if it's just a few days here and there, it's essential to plan for a proper break as soon as possible.
Remember, by setting boundaries, implementing sales systems, and prioritizing rest and recovery, you can achieve true success in mind. Here's to thriving in work and life without being shackled to our laptops!
