Aug 10, 2023Networking is a fundamental aspect of success in any field, but it's not just about collecting business cards or gaining something for ourselves. It's about nurturing genuine relationships and giving back to others in our network.

Too often, people approach networking with a mindset of "What can I get out of this?" rather than "What can I give?" It's important to show genuine interest in others, follow up with them, engage on social media, and show appreciation for their contributions. By investing in these relationships, we create a strong foundation upon which unexpected opportunities can arise.
One aspect of networking that often gets overlooked is diversity. Having a network that includes individuals from different industries, backgrounds, skill sets, experiences, and cultural backgrounds brings fresh perspectives and unexpected opportunities. Having a diverse network also increases the likelihood of passing business and referrals.
A powerful way to build and strengthen your network is by joining a Mastermind group. These groups provide a space for knowledge sharing, idea brainstorming, and accountability. When carefully selecting members who are supportive, complementary, and possess different skill sets and ideas, Mastermind groups can boost motivation, inspiration, and personal growth.
But building a power network isn't just about what you gain, it's also about what you can give. By becoming a connector within your network, you demonstrate your value. Act as a bridge between individuals who could benefit from knowing each other and watch as the relationships flourish. Being a connector increases your own value within the network and positions you as a valuable resource.
In today's digital age, the traditional business card has lost some of its power. Instead, I've embraced technology by utilizing a "tappy" sticker* on my phone. This sticker allows others to simply tap their phone on it and automatically access my profile and social media links. It's a more efficient and effective way of connecting and getting to know someone quickly.
One of the most powerful networking tools I personally utilize is my Golden Circle Mastermind group. Each member brings their own unique expertise to the table, ranging from executive coaching to acupuncture in Chinese medicine, copywriting and book publishing to vacation rental property marketing. This diverse group allows for a rich exchange of ideas, referrals, and collaborative opportunities.
It can also be beneficial to network within your own industry. In the counseling and coaching industry, having a network of professionals to collaborate with and refer business to is crucial. Diversity in skill sets, certifications, and even gender can attract different clients. While personal preferences may vary, some individuals prefer to work with a female coach, while others seek out male coaches. By surrounding ourselves with the right people, we create an environment for personal growth and success. Not every practitioner is the right fit for every client, and having an industry specific networks, allows for referring those clients out to a trusted colleague. This way, everyone in the network prospers.
Jim Rohn once said, "We become the average of the five people we spend the most time with." This rings true for all aspects of our lives, including our professional growth. If we want to reach higher levels of success, we must surround ourselves with individuals who challenge and push us to improve.
Networking is not just about expanding our circles, but also about evaluating the people we currently surround ourselves with. Are they individuals we respect and admire? Do they have lives we would want for ourselves? It's okay to limit interactions with individuals who don't align with our goals and values, while still maintaining family and lifelong friendships.
Attending workshops, webinars, and seminars related to our interests and goals is another powerful way to expand our network. By immersing ourselves in environments filled with growth-minded individuals, we attract high achievers and open doors to new opportunities. Remember, success often resides just outside of our comfort zones.
Building a power network is not just about expanding our circles, but about nurturing genuine relationships, giving back, fostering diversity, and surrounding ourselves with individuals who support and challenge us. As we continue on our journey of success, let us not forget the power of our network in shaping our mindset and driving our achievements.
